Augmented reality is a technology that integrates digital elements into the real world. The user's field of vision is overlaid with a digital layer that displays additional information or virtual objects. In contrast to virtual reality (VR), which creates a completely computer-generated environment, AR preserves the real world and merely adds digital content.

Differentiation from VR and MR:
  * In virtual reality (VR), the user is completely immersed in a computer-generated world. The real world is completely faded out and replaced by an artificial environment.
  * Mixed reality (MR), or mixed reality, represents an intermediate stage between AR and VR. Here, digital objects can interact with and influence the real world.
